(Excerpt from Retrospec)
Mantra is our premium fixie/single-speed. Quick response dual braking, sealed-bearing hubs, and dripping with style, Mantra is your go-to for your every commuting, cruising, zipping, coasting, and speeding need.
Mantra comes standard with sealed cartridge bearing hubs to keep your bike clean and healthy. Less dampness, water, and grime can get into the delicate parts of your bike when the hubs are sealed. This means less required maintenance and a longer living bicycle.
Mantra comes installed on the single-speed side. This is a bike you can ride regularly and quickly and easily transform into a fixed-gear whenever you like.
We have very high standards. Every single element that goes anywhere near our bikes undergoes serious scrutiny. The Kenda commuter tires we pick have a unique tread with water dispersion grooves. There is more surface area on these tires and water travels through the channels on the tire. This means you have more traction and better grip on the road but also minimal resistance. The double-wall super deep-V Star rims with a machined braking surface and the always dependable KMC chain ensure a smooth ride.
The Mantra actually blew away our expectations when we began carrying them. We began stocking them in 2019 and they have done exceptionally well with our customer base.
All of the parts with the exception of the tires are solid and reliable. If you upgrade the tires to something more Philly-friendly, you've got a great bike for zipping around the city without worrying about flats or dreaded drivetrain issues.
With a simplistic single speed drivetrain, you won't have to worry about getting your gears adjusted, shifting cables changed, derailleur hanger aligned, and much more.
Another plus is single speed drivetrain components are generally thicker, so the parts take longer to wear out.
The only cons we've noticed with these are the tires are pretty basic (just like any other <$500 bike) and the braking surface isn't machined.
What that means is your brake pads will be grinding down anodizing from the rim every time you brake, which will cause the color from the brake track to fade.
Despite this, the braking performance is still great and will stop on a dime.
It's also worth mentioning that because the bike is a single speed, you won't have any lower gear options to choose from if you hit a hill. When dealing with hills, you'll just have to tough it out. Fortunately, Philadelphia is super flat.
Overall, if you're looking for a simplistic bike that won't cost you a ton in maintenance, this is your best bet.
